Don't miss Yellowstone this spring!

Yellowstone's west entrance at West Yellowstone is now open with access to the Old Faithful geyser area. You can also travel from West Yellowstone to Mammoth Hot Springs and on through Lamar Valley to Cooke City. Current roads that are open include: West Yellowstone and Mammoth Hot Springs to Old Faithful. Restroom facilities will be available at Madison Junction and Old Faithful and the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center is open.

Gallatin Forest Food Storage Order In Effect

Managers of the Custer Gallatin National Forests remind visitors that the Food Storage Order for the Gallatin National Forest went into effect on March 1 annually.  The order for the Beartooth Ranger District on the Custer National Forest is in effect year-round. 

Both orders require that unattended food, refuse, and attractants be stored in hard-sided vehicles or bear-resistant containers (or hung above the ground out of the reach of wildlife).  Individuals who do not comply with the food storage orders can be fined.

Yellowstone Bears Emerging From Dens

Grizzly bears are emerging from hibernation in the Greater Yellowstone Area, so hikers, skiers and snowshoers are advised to stay in groups of three of more, make noise on the trail and carry bear spray.

Spring Crust cruising!

Crust Cruising: A euphoric phenomena allowing skate skiers to travel over large open areas.  Determined solely by Mother Nature. Periodically throughout the spring, ideal crust cruising conditions present themselves.  To the experienced, it is an addiction.  The uninitiated question the daybreak departure, but soon are enlightened.   Follow these rules and hope to find yourself at the right place, at the right time.

Yellowstone Park West Entrance Spring Opening Dates

The West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, located on the edge of West Yellowstone, Montana, closed to over-the-snow travel March 15, 2014 to begin preparing roads for spring vehicle access, and will reopen to motorsized vehicles April 18, 2014.
